i got a message last night asking what my favourite moment from this summer was, and although there were so many blissful days this one moment sticks out in my mind and i wanted to share it. we drove to the west side of the island to go free diving for shells. the beach we chose was called pray for sex beach, because there is this huge rock that someone spray painted “pray 4 sex” on years and years ago and the name stuck.
it was an absolutely breathtaking day, with crystal clear waters. we encountered 8 sea turtles, and 3 at one time were swimming around us happily. there was no one else at the beach but us, as it was morning in the middle of the week.
my boyfriend dived down into a small crevasse and came back up to the surface with his hand extended to me, and with his snorkel in his mouth grinned and said “DA PUKA!” which made me crack up because talking with a snorkel in your mouth is always hilarious. puka is the hawaiian word for “hole” and the shell he found was a perfectly round, curly shell with light purple and pale orange colours, and a small natural hole in the middle. just seeing his grinning, mask-and-snorkel covered face so happy to have found this for me in this beautiful azure blue water with turtles around us, i had that intensely settling feeling of knowing there was nowhere in the world i would have rather been, no one i would rather be with, and so thankful that we had each other and got to experience this beauty together. it felt surreal and fleeting. i have that little purple puka on a simple wire bracelet now and it reminds me of this day. :)
